Our Historical Timeline

  • 1959

    Founded in 1959

Leon Levine opened the first Family Dollar store in Charlotte, N.C., with a simple yet powerful mission: to offer quality products at affordable prices for hardworking families in the neighborhood.

  • 1960s - 1980s

    Expanding Everyday Value

Family Dollar grew steadily through the 1960s and 1970s. By 1969, there were 27 stores in four states with annual sales of more than $5 million. In 1970, Family Dollar became a publicly traded company on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), helping fuel its national growth. By the end of 1979, Family Dollar was trading on the New York Stock Exchange and saw annual sales of over $100 million. Expansion continued through the 1980s, with more than 1,500 stores in operation by 1989.

  • 1990s - 2000s

    Building a Nationwide Presence

The 1990s and early 2000s marked a period of significant growth for Family Dollar. In 1995, Family Dollar entered the Fortune 500 list for the first time. By the end of the 1990s, there were more than 2,500 stores and annual sales of over $1 million. In the early 2000s, Family Dollar averaged 500-600 new store openings each year, reaching the 5,000th store milestone in 2009 and with celebrating its 50th anniversary.

  • 2000s

    Investing in Innovation

In the early 2000s, Family Dollar strengthened its business through key investments in supply chain, store experience, and product offerings, including private-label brands and expanded food options. These efforts helped fuel national growth and reinforced the company’s role as a trusted resource for value-seeking customers.
