FAMILY DOLLAR SUSTAINABILITY


Family Dollar values our customers, Team Members and the communities served by our stores. To that end, the information on this social responsibility webpage is designed to provide insight to the Company’s operations as it relates to environmental and social impact, as well as corporate stewardship.

For more than half a century, Family Dollar has been providing customers with value and convenience in easy-to-shop neighborhood locations. As we have grown to more than 8,000 stores and 11 distribution centers, we’ve never lost sight of what it means to be a good neighbor.

Providing value in the community goes beyond our everyday low prices. It also means ensuring that we operate our stores and distribution centers with honesty, integrity and respect and that we are good stewards of the environment.

Facility Energy Benchmarking

Family Dollar is using EPA’s Portfolio Manager tool to measure the energy use intensity at all of our facilities. To date, more than 5,500 of our sites have been benchmarked in Portfolio Manager with over 7,700 sites registered, making Family Dollar the single largest user of the tool! Portfolio Manager enables us to recognize our most efficient sites, identify our least efficient ones, and determine how our buildings are performing relative to the retail sector as a whole.

Energy Management System

Each Family Dollar store is equipped with an Energy Management System (EMS) that allows for centralized control of HVAC and lighting, along with extensive energy use reporting. Stores averaged 18.1% savings in energy usage in the first year of operation. Further refinement of the EMS lighting settings in 2013 enabled us to safely achieve a reduction in exterior lighting runtimes of over 60 minutes per store per day.

Lighting Efficiency

Family Dollar has converted its new store exterior sign program to light emitting diodes (LED) starting in 2014. In addition, for new store projects, LED building lighting has been in effect for the past few years.  The LED lighting solution is much more energy efficient and has a longer life expectancy, so this conversion is saving energy as well as maintenance costs for the company, and has led to a substantial reduction in associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

We are also testing a complete building package for LED lights which will include the use of all of our lights in the building and on site.  The new addition would be for LED parking lot pole lights to help provide a more inviting light on site along with helping to provide a more secure environment to our customers.  On the interior of the building the use of LED strip fixtures will help reduce energy costs while also helping to reduce maintenance.  This will also make for a more inviting space to shop and provide exceptional color rendering of product.
In 2010, we introduced a new lighting layout which helped reduce our lighting energy consumption by about 10% per store with only a minor light reduction on the sales floor. This system also helped reduced assembly and installation time.

Our lighting designs for new stores and renovated stores have implemented measures that reduce the light power density to a level that qualifies us for tax deductions from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 as well as energy efficiency rebates from numerous utilities.

LEED® and the US Green Building Council

In 2010, Family Dollar opened its first LEED store for New Construction (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which is a rating system devised by the USGBC (United States Green Building Council) to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage market transformation towards sustainable design. The store, which achieved a Gold level certification in May 2011, has acted as a testing platform for our continued evaluation of sustainable design changes and innovations to make our new stores as energy efficient as possible. Recycling

Family Dollar recycles approximately 5,000 cubic feet and 26 tons of cardboard on a weekly basis. In FY2013, we recycled 200,000 tons of cardboard. Our distribution centers each recycle approximately 2,500 cubic feet, or 13 tons of plastic each month. With our new pallet delivery system we are able to bring more cardboard back to the warehouse for recycling. As part of our recycling program, we also recycle metal and have instituted standards for recycling of industrial forklift batteries, fluorescent lights and ballasts.

Carbon Disclosure Project

For the past two years, Family Dollar has disclosed its annual GHG emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an organization that collects, analyzes, and evaluates the disclosure and performance carbon emissions and reduction for over 1500 of the world’s largest corporations. Family Dollar achieved an improvement in both our disclosure and performance evaluations over this two year span. This reporting process enables us to mitigate risk, capitalize on opportunities, and make investment decisions that drive action towards a more sustainable world. RILA Sustainability

Family Dollar has engaged with the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) as a Member Organization for several years, and continues to serve on RILA’s sustainability program steering committee. This involvement has afforded Family Dollar the opportunity to network with other retailers on sustainability best practices, and collaborate on solutions to sustainability challenges common to many retail organizations.
